Safe And Effective New Way To Stop Itching in Dogs!

Allergy season is upon us. And while people may sneeze and have runny eyes, dogs manifest most of their allergies by itching. Itching is one of the primary reasons that dogs are brought in to North Elm Animal Hospital. And this year we have a wonderful new medication to stop the itch:

Cytopoint is an injectable medication that provides 4 to 8 weeks of relief from itching in allergic dogs. It is very safe and begins working within 24 hours. Cytopoint is a monoclonal antibody that mimics the dogs own immune system. It targets IL-31, a cytokine that is part of the "itch" pathway. When this cytokine is neutralized, the itch signal is not received by the brain. Unlike other medications such at predisone and Apoquel, Cytopoint does not signficantly suppress the immune system, making it safe to use in dogs of all ages and in those with other medical conditions.

At NEAH we have been using Cytopoint for about 8 months. Dr. Sims reports that several clients have called within 24 hours of the injection to call it "amazing."

It is important to note that dogs with allergies often have secondary skin infections. These must also be treated in order to effectively treat the allergy. Treating these infections along with the use of Cytopoint can make your pet's life, and yours, much happier. Please contact us if your beloved pooch is itching. We can help you both get a good night's sleep with appropriate therapies and Cytopoint!
